Transatlantic: Whirlwind

Posted under Music by admin on Saturday 21 November 2009 at 5:41 pm

Holy cow, is this a load of fun! I was recently turned on to this group featuring Mike Portnoy from Dream Theater and oh my, once again Progressive Rock at its finest! Transatlantic’s latest album is a wonderful journey from start to finish. I love albums that flow from one song to the next and this is one solid piece of music from beginning to end!

It’s amazing Mike Portnoy who’s know for hard hitting progressive metal stuff would be found doing some lighter Progressive rock, but this rock really does rock the house without bleeding the ears. As one may find Progressive music sometimes hard to get into, this album I found very easy to grasp. The music is very melodic and just plain fun, so grab the extra special edition when you get a few. You’ll love playing this at work.

Preview: Walking Stick Game

Posted under Games by admin on Tuesday 10 November 2009 at 6:37 am

TitleScreenThis is very much an EARLY rough draft in process, but I would like to get some initial feedback if possible.

Here is some initial background for this project…

a long time ago and a galaxy not so far away…

Back in days of boom-boxes, Reganomics and Transformers, there was the Apple IIe, I wrote a very simple program in Apple Basic called Walking Stick. While it was a very simple idea, (push the stick from one end of the screen to the next and hit your fire button to engage certain objects), it allowed me to create a vast world to play in graphically and setup my knowledge of basic programming languages. Sadly the code is nowhere to be found (darn my need to overwrite stuff due to lack of space on a 5’25″ floppy), but the memory and images of the game have remained. For many years I have wanted to recreate this but have neither had the time nor the ability.

As a youngin, there was an intense desire to create a video game of some sort. My fandom grew to those great arcade video games of the nineties, such as Bad Dude, TMNT, Simpsons, X-Men etc… I was also a big fan of the Mega Man games and always wished they contained a Mega Man editor with the games so you could create your own maps. However my ability to create this visions I had as a kid where hampered by the technology and my abilities at the time.

Jump to 2009 and now Walking Stick is reborn. Graphically designed in the old Apple II style this game is made to be reminensident of all those great Apple IIe games we played for hours. The goal here was to create “now” what I would have wanted to make back in 1986. Inspired by Pitfall 2, Captain Goodnight, etc… this is an attempt to make a childhood vision come to life.

A lot of this is inspired (or somwhat lifted) from old Apple IIe games. The artists of the time did an amazing job creating works of art out of only 6 or 8 colors. When you needed a specific color you had to figure out what shade of black and white would somewhat produce it. It truly was a style of art forgotten to the modern world of the Intranet.

So please feel free to download this Mac Game (sorry Windows users) and test out version 1. This is just the beginning stages as I plan to keep this as an ongoing project. I welcome all and any feedback and especially if you are a graphic artist and want to help me on my next endeavour (A Transformers Video game) please drop me a line.

Otherwise feel free to download, sit back and enjoy some good old Apple IIe goodness!
